England’s seaside towns were once the destination of choice for wealthy Victorian holidaymakers escaping London and the industrial cities. A long, slow decline has since stripped many of them of funding and the shine they once had. This series looks at the places, and the people, who remain.
It begins in Clacton-on-Sea, on the Essex coast. Within it, Jaywick has been ranked the most deprived neighbourhood in England for more than a decade, and in recent years the town has found itself at the centre of the country’s politics. The work is ongoing.
